Calivigny Island

In 2001, Martine Cohen was sailing through the southern Caribbean when she spotted an 80-acre island off Grenada’s south coast, swam ashore, and called her husband. Within hours Georges Cohen, the French entrepreneur who had built and sold the IT consultancy Transiciel, had flown down to see it for himself. He bought it, and over the following years spent roughly $100 million turning a scrubby, undeveloped islet into one of the most complete private-island estates in the Caribbean: importing thousands of tons of white sand to widen the beaches, planting tens of thousands of palms, and building out a compound of residences, gardens, and staff infrastructure that has no real precedent in the region. Calivigny is not a resort brand’s idea of a private island. It is one family’s idea of paradise, built at personal expense and then opened, selectively, to guests who rent the entire place.

That distinction matters more than any amenity list. There is no reception desk, no other party sharing the beach, and no menu of room categories to choose from, because there is only one booking: the whole island, for one group, for a minimum of seven nights. The Beach House, a French Colonial-meets-Bali compound with interiors touched by Oscar de la Renta and Richard Frinier, anchors one side of the property; the 9-suite Overhang House and a trio of two-bedroom beach cottages fill out the rest, for 25 bedrooms in total. Guests functionally take over a private nation-state for the week, staffed to match, with a General Manager and full household running underneath them.

The reason to choose Calivigny over the more heavily trafficked BVI or Bahamas private-island circuit is Grenada itself. It sits well south of the hurricane belt’s usual bullseye, has direct flights from several major North American and European gateways, and remains a genuinely undercrowded corner of the Caribbean, spice-growing, rainforested, and largely untouched by the mega-yacht congestion of St. Barths or the Exumas. Calivigny is five minutes by boat from the mainland, but the crossing does the work of an ocean: once on the island, there is no other development in view, no boat traffic to negotiate, and no possibility of an uninvited face at the next table.

Michelin-trained chefs, sourced individually for each stay, run the kitchen; ingredients come off the dock and out of the island’s own organic garden, and menus are built entirely around the group in residence rather than served off a fixed rotation. Dinner might be a beach barbecue one night and a formal seated meal in the rotunda the next, but either way it is cooked for a single party that has already claimed every villa, every boat, and every stretch of sand on the property.

Calivigny rewards the kind of group that wants total control of a place rather than access to a brand: a family marking a milestone, a wedding party that wants the entire guest list under one roof, or a small number of ultra-high-net-worth travelers who have already done the standard private-island circuit and want the one that still feels like someone’s actual home.
