- December to April is Lima's coastal summer: clear skies, warm days, and the city at its brightest. Reservations at the marquee restaurants must be secured months ahead regardless of season. The winter months of June to October bring the garúa, a persistent grey coastal mist, but the dining rooms are unaffected and the city quieter.
Lima is the reason serious eaters now fly to South America. In a single, walkable band of the city sit the current No. 1 restaurant in the world and the restaurant that held that title in 2023, along with a cluster of dining rooms that would anchor the scene of any other capital. No other city concentrates this much culinary firepower, and none does it with quite Lima’s range, from Nikkei tasting menus to a bowl of ceviche eaten looking at the Pacific.
The headline names are Maido and Central. Mitsuharu Tsumura’s Maido, a temple of Nikkei cooking that marries Japanese precision to Peruvian and Amazonian ingredients, was named the world’s best restaurant in June 2025. A few minutes away in Barranco, Virgilio Martínez and Pía León’s Central climbs the country’s ecosystems course by course and topped the same list in 2023. In the same Barranco building, León’s own Kjolle carries her singular voice into the global top ten. Around them orbit Mérito, Astrid y Gastón, and Cosme, any one of which would justify the trip.
What makes Lima work as a stay, rather than a series of reservations, is the city around the tables. Barranco is a bohemian quarter of colonial mansions, galleries, and the MATE museum. San Isidro is leafy and residential, home to the heritage Country Club hotel and Astrid y Gastón’s restored hacienda. Miraflores runs along the clifftop above the ocean, where the Belmond and the international towers look out over surfers and paragliders. The pre-Columbian past is close too, in the Larco Museum’s vast collections and the adobe pyramids of Pachacamac to the south.
Practicalities have improved sharply. A new terminal at Jorge Chávez opened in June 2025, a $2.4 billion rebuild that tripled the airport’s gate capacity and made arrivals and Cusco connections far smoother. Lima is, for most travelers, also the gateway to Machu Picchu, and a few days here at the front or back of a Peru itinerary is time exceptionally well spent.
Two things to plan around. The tables that draw people here are booked months ahead, so the calendar, not the hotel, should drive the trip. And Michelin has never operated a guide in Peru, so the accolades that matter here come from The World’s 50 Best and its Latin American edition. On those lists, Lima has no equal in the hemisphere.

Built in 1927 and declared a national cultural monument, the Country Club is the only hotel in Lima protected as a heritage building.
