Ultra PremierMandarin Oriental Old Cataract, Aswan
Mandarin Oriental · On a granite outcrop above the first cataract of the Nile, overlooking Elephantine Island, Aswan
The legendary Victorian-era hotel opened in 1899 on a rose-granite promontory above the Nile, its terrace one of the most storied views in Africa, gazing across to Elephantine Island and the Aga Khan Mausoleum. Long operated as Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, the property was reflagged to Mandarin Oriental on 1 May 2026 and is being progressively renovated wing by wing while remaining open, with the full transformation to six dining venues and a new spa scheduled to complete in July 2027. Its literary and cinematic history, from Agatha Christie to countless heads of state, is part of the fabric of the place.
Why we recommend it
The single most romantic address in Upper Egypt and the natural end point of any Nile journey, now under Mandarin Oriental stewardship; the terrace at sunset is reason enough to come.
