Monaco compresses more concentrated wealth into two square kilometres than anywhere else on earth, and Monte-Carlo is its stage set. Casino Square is the pivot: the Charles Garnier casino on one side, the Hôtel de Paris and the reborn Café de Paris on the others, the whole tableau framed by the harbour and the mountains that rise almost vertically behind it. This is a principality built for arrival and display, and it has been perfecting the art since 1863.
The grand hotels here are institutions rather than mere accommodation. The Hôtel de Paris, open since 1864, remains the address against which all others are measured, its cellar and its three-star Louis XV part of the national furniture. The Hermitage, with its Eiffel-domed winter garden, offers the same heritage in a softer key. Both belong to the Société des Bains de Mer, the company that effectively built modern Monaco and still runs its casino, its spa and much of its dining.
For contrast, look just over the French border. The Maybourne Riviera, opened in 2021 above Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, is a modernist glass volume cut into the cliff, with the best views on this stretch of coast and a dining roster that runs from Mauro Colagreco to Jean-Georges Vongerichten. A few minutes away, Monte-Carlo Beach trades palace formality for a 1929 seaside rhythm, an Olympic seawater pool and the organic Michelin kitchen of Elsa.
The calendar gives Monaco its two great crescendos. The Grand Prix in early June turns the streets into a circuit watched from balconies and superyacht decks, and the Yacht Show each September fills Port Hercule with the largest vessels afloat. Around them runs a permanent luxury economy: the maisons of the Carré d’Or, the seawater spa at the Thermes Marins, the private salons of the casino.
Most guests arrive the way the principality prefers, by helicopter. The seven-minute hop from Nice over the Corniches is less a transfer than an overture, setting down at the Fontvieille heliport with the whole compressed spectacle laid out below. It is a fitting entrance to a place that has always understood the value of a grand one.

Monaco's defining address since 1864, standing on Casino Square beside the Casino de Monte-Carlo and the Café de Paris. A multi-year top-to-bottom renovation completed in 2019 modernised the rooms and added the Prince Rainier III suite and a rooftop pool while preserving the marble lobby and legendary cellar of some 350,000 bottles. It houses Alain Ducasse's three-star Le Louis XV and the rooftop, one-star Le Grill.
Why The single most storied hotel on the Riviera, wired directly into Casino Square and home to arguably the most important restaurant in the principality. For belle-epoque grandeur it has no peer here.

The Maybourne Riviera

Opened in 2021 on a rocky promontory between Monaco and Menton, a sharp architectural counterpoint to the principality's belle-epoque palaces. Its rooms and suites all face the Mediterranean, with an infinity pool cut into the cliff and Cap-Martin falling away below. Dining is a roster of names: abc kitchens riviera by Jean-Georges Vongerichten on the top floor, La Piscine by Jean-Georges, and seasonal beach dining on the shore.
Why The most contemporary tier-one option on this stretch of coast and the antidote to Monte-Carlo's density, minutes away yet perched in near-total privacy with the best views in the region. The Maybourne name (Claridge's, The Connaught) guarantees the service pedigree.

Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo

The Hôtel de Paris's more intimate sister, opened in 1900, celebrated for its glass-domed winter garden attributed to the Eiffel workshop and its pink belle-epoque facade overlooking the harbour. An extensive phased renovation running from 2024 into 2026 has delivered redesigned Diamond Suites and a new bar, Gustave, beneath the cupola. Guests share access to the vast Thermes Marins spa via a direct link.
Why For those who want SBM heritage and Casino Square proximity in a quieter, more romantic register than the Hôtel de Paris. The Eiffel-domed winter garden is one of Monaco's great interiors.
Hôtel Metropole Monte-Carlo
