Mustique

The island's only hotel, built around the shell of an 18th-century sugar and coral warehouse and restored into a resort in the 1960s-70s by the legendary theatrical set and costume designer Oliver Messel, whose Caribbean Palladian style (louvered shutters, four-poster beds, sweeping verandas) still defines the property. Room counts are reported variously as 17 to 20 keys across rooms, suites and cottages, reflecting different configurations over the years rather than a single fixed number. Unlike almost every other property in this index, Cotton House is not run by an outside hotel operator or brand: it is owned and operated directly by The Mustique Company, the same entity that owns the island's airport, utilities and roads. A phased renovation is underway from April 2026 to November 2027 covering the Seaview rooms and adding a new two-bedroom Seaview Coutinot Residence, with private pools and enlarged layouts in the Messel idiom; guests booking in this window should confirm which wings are open. A new spa, built as a standalone villa in Messel-inspired style with its own treatment rooms, hair salon and shop, reopened in November 2025 ahead of the room renovation.

Why It is the only hotel that exists on a private island otherwise made up of individually owned villas, and it is run by the island's own governing company rather than a hotel group, which is unusual even among one-of-a-kind ultra-luxury properties.

Beyond Cotton House, Mustique's accommodation is almost entirely a rental pool of 80 or more privately owned villas, ranging from roughly two to ten or more bedrooms, each individually furnished and staffed and bookable directly through The Mustique Company's own reservations team or through specialist agents such as Isle Blue and Exceptional Villas. Owners are a mix of longtime European and American families, and while some houses carry famous names, the pool is genuinely residential rather than a managed hotel-villa product: staffing, decor and availability vary house to house. A structural quirk of the model is that requests made more than twelve months ahead of a stay are only provisionally held and are not confirmed until roughly the twelve-month mark, when owners finalize their own usage plans. Among the villas that pass in and out of the rental pool is Les Jolies Eaux, the six-bedroom, Oliver Messel-designed house built for Princess Margaret and later sold out of royal ownership; its current owner is not publicly confirmed. Mick Jagger owns two houses on the island, including Stargroves, a Japanese-influenced house completed in the 1980s; Bryan Adams and Tommy Hilfiger, whose British colonial-style oceanfront estate is known as Palm Beach, also own homes here today. These three are public knowledge, but whether any specific house is in the rental pool at a given time depends entirely on the owner's own travel plans that season.

Why This is effectively the primary way to stay on Mustique, and understanding it as a villa-owner cooperative rather than a rental agency is the key to booking it well.
