Necker Island

Necker Island is not a hotel that happens to be owned by one family. It is Richard Branson’s actual home, bought for $180,000 in 1978 when it was an uninhabited scrap of rock north of Virgin Gorda, and it has stayed in his hands ever since. That distinction shapes everything about a stay here: there is no brand standard to hit, no corporate owner several steps removed, just one man’s fairly extravagant idea of what a 74-acre private island should feel like, executed over four decades and rebuilt at least once after a lightning-sparked fire destroyed the original Great House in 2011.

The reason to go to this exact place rather than another private-island resort in the BVI is the two very different ways to be there. For most of the year, Necker is sold as a full-island buyout: one group takes over the Great House’s eleven bedrooms and the ten scattered Balinese-style houses, up to several dozen guests strong, and the island becomes a private kingdom for a wedding, a milestone birthday, or a family compound holiday with total say over the run of the place. Several times a year, though, Virgin Limited Edition runs Celebration Weeks, when the same island is opened to individual room and villa bookings, so a couple or a single family can buy a slice of Necker without needing thirty-plus people to fill it. Both are the same island and the same standard of service; the difference is simply whether you are renting the whole stage or a seat in the audience for a week already in motion.

Life on the ground runs on a deliberately unstructured rhythm: reef snorkeling and diving off the beaches, kite-surfing and wing-foiling in the reliable breeze through Necker Cut, tennis, a Balinese-inspired spa, and a hillside yoga and fitness pavilion known as the Nest that looks out over the whole property. A resident population of flamingos, ring-tailed lemurs, and giant tortoises roams the grounds, a longstanding curiosity that has nothing to do with the accommodation and everything to do with whose island this is. Dinner moves around the property by design, from themed nights on the Great House roof terrace to barbecues on Turtle Beach to a floating sushi bar staged from a canoe in the pool, so a week here reads more like a string of set pieces than a fixed restaurant schedule.

Getting there is itself part of the experience rather than a preamble to it. Guests fly commercially or privately into Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island, Tortola, and are met on arrival for a short drive to a private dock, then a roughly 30-minute speedboat crossing directly to Necker, included in every stay. A helipad on the island also allows charter helicopter transfers from Tortola, Virgin Gorda, or St Thomas for guests who want to skip the boat entirely. Either way, there is no ferry queue, no shared water taxi, and no shared island once you arrive: the appeal of Necker has always rested as much on that total privacy of approach as on the house itself.

Necker draws two fairly distinct kinds of travelers, and both come for the same underlying reason. One is the large-group buyout crowd, often a wedding party or an extended family, who want an entire private island for an event with no other guests anywhere on the property. The other is the individual-stay traveler using a Celebration Week to experience Branson’s home without commanding the whole island, typically a couple or family drawn by the brand cachet, the wildlife, and the water sports as much as by exclusivity itself. What unites both is that this is one of the very few Caribbean properties where the owner’s own history is the primary draw, not an amenity list.
